"Skeptics among you might say that the twin studies showing similarity for belief are just reflecting some cultural or family influence that wasn't properly corrected for in the study design. However in one study of adopted twins, the researchers looked at religious belief in a number of adopted twins raised apart. They found exactly the same result--greater similarity in identical twin pairs, even if raised apart. The conclusion is unavoidable: faith is definitely influenced by genes."

Theists, why does God allow suffering..
by The Quiet One in..specifically, the suffering of animals.
you can talk about free will/sin/people choosing to not listen to god etc to explain human suffering being allowed.. but how can you love a god that allows animals, that haven't sinned or chosen to not have anything to do with god, to have their short lives ended in often long, drawn out, painful ways.
i could list stories i've read that would probably make you feel ill, but i'm not looking to shock anyone or start an emotional debate.

"Earthquakes might seem random and cruel but not compared to the cost of not having them which is no intelligent life or life without freedom like robots."
.. You haven't answered my question about earthquakes. Please reread it...

Protect the elderly
by defender of truth inthis weeks km is telling elders to arrange for group studies with people in local nursing homes, with instructions on how to word things when speaking to the directors etc.. they are clearly trying to get to people who may not be entirely able to think for themselves or who may lack critical thinking and yet may have money to leave to them.. what can you do?.
well, if you wanted to, write a short and simple letter or email to your local care home, perhaps directly even speak to the director yourself... warn them about the brainwashing and danger of breaking up of families etc.
the km says they should identify themselves as jw's... .

Disturbing Footnote in Tomorrow's Study Article...
by HeyThere inarticle is basicqlly about families where a spouse is working away from home for an extended period, etc...a foot note says basically that some studies have shown that working away from home can cause serious consequences, such as infidelity, homosexuality, or incest.
.
pull it up on jw.org...that is what it says.

Also, can I point out that the wording used in the footnote is 'reports', not studies. This is so vague that it could simply mean they have heard this from JW's.

"On the other hand, there are few studies that analyse the maintenance of social parent-child relation via telephone or the Internet, which could explain whether preteen children do not feel having lost “safe object of attachment” when they communicate from a distance. Michael Murray (2003) points out that social relation with a preteen child is not broken (in this case, the object of attachment) if it is maintained via telephone or Internet."
"In cases when children were fostered by grandparents and both of parents were working in a foreign country, i.e. when, according to the theory, the object of attachment had changed, children should have experienced more difficulties that those who stayed with their parents. However, the Crosstabulation analysis revealed no differences between parents’ and grandparents’ answers, i.e. children who were left with their grandparents encounter similar problems as those who stayed with parents."

Here are some interesting pages on the subject:
"Reyes said that several studies showed how migration of parents is indeed heart-breaking for children, making them long for parental care, get confused over gender roles, be vulnerable to abuse, and even develop consumerist attitudes."

I clicked the link.
It does contain the footnote. Just click the asterisk on paragraph 9 and it takes you to:
"^ par. 9
Reports from various countries indicate that living apart from a mate or children in order to work abroad is a factor that for some has contributed to serious problems. These include infidelity on the part of one or both mates, homosexuality, or incest, and among children, increased behavioral and academic problems, aggression, anxiety, depression, or suicidal tendencies." -

Bigmac, no toy throwing involved here. If you read the responses, the overall tone is 'not gonna happen' or 'I'm not worried'. That is what I was talking about, not the lack of posts. I guess it's no big deal, maybe I just care about elderly people and got a bit overhyped.
I mean come on, I even wrote a letter and posted it as a template for others, not even one person has commented on it or thought it a good idea. Nothing I do makes any difference, but that's fine. Sorry to have annoyed you. Yeah, UK. -
